I am always fascinated by successful advisors who go above and beyond for their clients. This interview is with Lillian Meyers CFP ®, a financial advisor and planner in Sonoma California. She works with a unique target market, as you will see on her website and she has a very interesting story to tell about her practice.
Lillian Meyers, CFP®, CDFA, EA
Company Name: Meyers Financial Services, Inc.
Q – Please give us the background on how you got started as a financial advisor
Lillian –I started my business originally as a bookkeeping service in 1985 and then in 1987 added taxes. Later I realized this did not achieve my vision of providing solutions to my clients. One day I received a packet of advertising cards in the mail and went through them. I was intrigued with one that showed a stick person climbing stairs and achieving great success through Investments and financial services. I called the company and got the information then I researched the company and checked FINRA, SEC and the Better Business Bureau making sure it was legitimate and not a scam. I signed up, took my Series 7 and insurance license and viola, in 1989 I was able to start the next level in my business.
Q – How did you come up with your company name?
Lillian –Meyers is my last name and at the time I started my business in 1985 I did not need to file a fictitious name because I was using my name. It seemed the easiest way to establish my business without too much effort. After a few years I thought of changing the name, however, it seemed like all the names I wanted were taken and the only way I could stay unique was to use my own name. I became Meyers Financial Services, Inc in 2002 as I later evolved.
Q – Who is your favorite type of client?
Lillian –I love working with people who are easy to work with. Those who are willing to do the work and those who appreciate the experience and knowledge I bring to the table. I enjoy the experience of seeing my clients’ eyes light up when they realize everything they will accomplish in the work they do with me. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing my clients happy, with less stress worrying about the future.
Q – How do you define success?
Lillian – The ability to help and provide solution to my clients’ challenges, and having the freedom to do what I want in my business and personal life. In 1999 I realized I needed to define success and I knew then that it was not flying coach, but instead flying first class. This for me was the only way to fly!
Q- What book has inspired you the most?
Lillian – The Bible, How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, and The Assertiveness Guide for Women by Julie de Azevedo Hanks.
Q – What is it about financial planning and wealth management that drives your passion?
Lillian – Putting the puzzle together and being part of the clients’ solutions. The ability to offer custom options to my clients and help them achieve the results they seek. As a Registered Investment Advisor, I am able to offer a wide range of solutions that many advisors don’t have access to in their tool chest.
Q – What is the secret to your success?
Lillian – Believing in God, having a true love for people, and being loved by my husband of 56 years, Jerry Meyers.
Q – What is it about you that makes you an advocate for your clients?
Lillian – Because I was teased a lot when I was young and it had a profound impact on my determination. I wanted to defend and protect others’ who were being bullied. That has continued in my life and I have a passion to protect and defend people.
Q – What do you like to do in your spare time?
Lillian – I love to be around people. So attending a gathering of friends, family parties, and events are fun. Reading and going to the theater, attending the opera and various shows. Helping and being involved with nonprofits, especially Soroptimist International of the Americas and my community.
