In my work with the financial industry I occasionally run into advisors who are different in everything they do. One such advisor is Shanna Tingom. Her personality, drive, and enthusiasm are contagious. When you come into contact with Shanna, you can tell that she loves financial planning and you can feel a positive attitude emanating from her. I asked Shanna to share with us the factors that have made her so successful.
Company Name: Heritage Financial Strategies
Website: Heritage Financial Strategies
Q – Please give us the background on how you got started in financial services.
A – I’ve been in some form of financial services my whole career. I started in banking nearly 20 years ago, and was in the first generation of “bankers” to become sales-people. I loved helping find solutions for my clients, but I hated feeling like I was selling the “product du jour” just to fill a quota. It was a natural fit for me to become a Financial Advisor, so that I could have complete flexibility to find the right solution for my clients needs.
Q — How do you define success?
A — There’s a much overused quote that “success is a journey, not a destination”. I truly believe this! Success to me means the ability to get up every day and do a job that I love, that matters. Having great relationships with my clients and the ability to make a comfortable living, travel and spend time with my family.
Q- What book has inspired you the most?
A – Wow! There are so many! I’d have to say “The Worlds Best Known Marketing Secret” By Dr. Ivan Misner, founder of the Business Network International. I was introduced to this book and his organization almost 20 years ago, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without it and incorporating the BNI philosophy of “Givers Gain” into my life and my business.
Q – Why are you passionate about wealth management?
A – Because I’ve seen what the alternative is, first hand. Some people I know are good, hard-working people that never invested because they didn’t understand it and were scared of the markets due to having depression-era parents. My parents, for example, are lucky that mom has a good government pension, but they are both still working physically and emotionally demanding jobs because they want a higher standard of living than their pension and social security will allow. They did the best they knew how, and I’m passionate about teaching people about the market so they are not scared of it!
Q – What has been your most successful marketing strategy?
A – Referrals and Networking, without a doubt! I have an amazing book of clients that provide me with great referrals, and I don’t take that for granted. I also do a lot of networking and am very active in the community, and have many great referral sources.
Q – What is the secret to your success?
A – I am truly a “glass is half full” kind of gal! I always look at the bright side, even given the turmoil our financial markets have had over the last 5 years! No matter what situation someone comes to me with, I can help them develop a financial strategy to reach their goals, while maintaining a positive attitude about the situation.
Q – What is it about you that makes you a great leader?
A – I believe that attitude is contagious! I have fun with my clients, and this gives them the freedom to ask questions and feel in control, no matter what the market is doing! I lead by example, and because I love what I do, people naturally follow!
Q – Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A – Right where I am! I love my career, love my company, and I can’t imagine being anywhere other than where I am! Although, I do have plans to hire another assistant and buy a historic house to renovate it into my office within the next 3 to 5 years!
